Aretha Franklin with Lauryn Hill - A Rose Is Still A Rose
When I was young, I didn’t get this song, but when I was older, I thought the song’s message was a play on the word “deflowering”, i.e., a woman losing her virginity. To me, it’s saying that a man cannot “take” away a woman’s virtue by pretending to love her but using her for sex. A rose is still a rose, even if she is slut-shamed.
Does anyone else read this song that way? The imagery in the video seems to suggest this too.
This song was written by Lauryn Hill.
