I’m a very social person, and like being around people a large amount of the time, but as an introvert I definitely identify with this as well: it means having to perform.  And that can be SERIOUSLY draining.

Social performance can definitely be draining, and solitude is very important to my state of mind and energy level. But the good news for young people who are struggling with this, is that if you work on it you get better at it, and the better you get at it the easier it gets and the less energy it takes. You gradually figure out the little tricks and subtle moves which create comfort zones for you and those with whom you interact. Social performance is not a fixed attribute you’re born with; like everything in life, it only gets easier if you work on it. In my view (probably informed by my Chinese background), people who have developed their social graces and quieted their egos (the biggest energy drain) to a certain level of refinement can move about in the human world with minimal energy loss due to minimum friction, like a fish gliding smoothly through a clear stream, talking less and hearing more. Well, it’s one perspective anyway.

When I was younger, it was mostly about needing to perform.  However, as I get older, more and more, I think, “Oh, people are such a bunch of assholes.”
